SPIRIT OF AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

COMMUNICATION

Dear ARD sufferer,

This is a very important letter that you can send to your Congressional Official requesting his/her support for full funding of the National Institutes of Health, NIDDK with respect to diabetes and digestive and kidney diseases, specifically as it pertains to research of ARD (Adhesion Related Disorder) authorized in the FY2006 Budget. The reason this is so imperative is that ARD research has never been addressed before in the budget. When I was in Washington D.C. last June, my Congressman requested on my behalf, and other ARD sufferers, a letter to Chairman Regula of the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies. Congressman Regula is no longer chairman but the fact remains the language addressing ARD and the need for research consideration did show up in the budget.

I urge everyone to please send a copy of the following letter with an attached personal letter of how you life has been effected by ARD. This will be quite powerful and also personalize this request. Follow up within 2 weeks of sending this by calling your Congressperson office, asking for the Legislative Director and see if your request is being considered. The only way we can get funding for research is through appropriation bills which fund the budget. It is a complicated process but your Congressperson's support is what is needed. Let your voices be heard!!!!  This is a major step for AWARENESS.    Thank you........

This is the letter YOU should send to your Congress representative:

The Honorable [insert name of US Congressional Representative]
U.S. House of Representative
Washington D.C. 20515

Dear (U.S. Congressional representative),

I am writing to ask you to support full funding of the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) with respect to diabetes and digestive and kidney diseases, specifically as it pertains to research of Adhesion Related Disorder (ARD).

ARD commonly leads to abnormal attachments between the organs inside the abdomen. The adhesions are scar tissue resulting from previous operations, trauma, endometriosis, infection, radiation or chemo.  Very little is known about why adhesions form more aggressively in some people and diagnosis of the disease is typically difficult, and surgical correction is often unsuccessful. The House Appropriations   Committee encouraged NIDDK to investigate ARD and support research to find treatments and understand causation and to communicate these findings to broaden the knowledge of the disease in the medical community.

For additional background information on ARD, please visit http://www.niddk.nih.gov/federal/pdf/NIDDK_fy06_CJ.pdf  and view pages 52-53 to see specific actions requests.

As an ARD sufferer, I encourage you to request that funding be dedicated to the research of Adhesion Related Disorder. I hope I can count on your support to end the suffering and pain of the men, women and children who are afflicted by this debilatating and often silent killer. For more information about ARD, feel free to contact the co-founder of The American Adhesion Support Group Inc. at anthea@bombobeach.com or www.bombobeach.com.

Bombo beach is my favourite place in Australia. It is located on the south coast of New South Wales in a beautiful place called Kiama. I have visited and played there since I was very young, and now share it with my own children. It is where I visit when my pain is out of control. I close my eyes think about the beach and walk along it's shore and rock pools. It gives me the comfort and strength to get passed the pain.
Visualisation is one of my favourite diversions to help me regain control of my pain, and I thought that if I could share it with you, it might help you to find your own special place too. To find out how I do it, look in the "How to Cope" link on the side menu panel.
